Creatively Speaking With: John Hobbs

Like his creative hero, Tom Waits, our VP Creative Director turns everyday moments into art — whether it’s designing a genius campaign or just surviving another meeting.

John’s creative hero:

Tom Waits

Why?

I think he’s a genius street poet, musician and performer who brings unique flavor to everything he does.

The pieces of Waits’ work that John comes back to again and again:

The album “Rain Dogs” and the films “Down by Law” and “Coffee and Cigarettes.”

The best piece of creative work John’s produced at Manifest:

A campaign for the Paper and Packaging Board called Go Papertarian!, starring the amazing Retta Sirleaf from “Parks and Recreation.” The campaign educated people about the many paper, paper packaging and cardboard products out there, which are far better choices for the planet than other materials, since paper and cardboard are renewable and can be recycled many times over. Credit goes to Creative Directors Kristen Youngman and (Content) Tess Dmitrovsky, as well as the entire P+PB team.

The title of John’s memoir would be:

“A Life Spent Mostly in Meetings”

His most treasured possessions:

Artwork from friends

John’s idea of happiness:

Making stuff

Of misery:

Flight delays, and time spent in airports.

John’s first concert:

Elvis! At Olympia Stadium in Detroit. My mother was a fan and brought my sisters and I when we were kids.
